About

Relay is an independent bilingual magazine exploring how historical trauma remains present in contemporary society. Each issue focuses on one event and traces its impact on collective memory, identity, language, and everyday life.

The first issue is dedicated to the Holodomor, the 1932–1933 famine in Ukraine that killed millions and remained largely unspoken for decades. Today, it is officially recognized by more than 30 countries as an act of genocide.

Challenge

Historical trauma is often presented either as academic research or as emotionally overwhelming material, both of which can create distance between the reader and the subject.

The aim was to find a more balanced editorial approach: to make the historical event clear, accessible, and emotionally present, without oversimplifying its complexity or turning it into sensational content.

English Adaptation

Since the main issue is written in Ukrainian, the English adaptation was placed as a separate section at the end of the magazine. This keeps the original reading flow intact while making the content accessible to non-Ukrainian readers.

The adaptation follows the same chapter structure, titles, and subtitles as the main issue, allowing readers to navigate between the two versions easily.
