About

Relay is an independent bilingual magazine exploring cultural trauma through Ukrainian history, memory, and identity. The first issue focuses on the Holodomor, presenting historical research through a careful editorial system that combines archival material, typography, visual essays, and data-led storytelling.

Challenge

Historical trauma is often presented either as dense academic research or as emotionally overwhelming material. Both approaches can create distance between the reader and the subject. The challenge was to design a publication that could make the Holodomor understandable without simplifying it, and emotional without becoming sensational.

English Adaptation

Because the main issue is written in Ukrainian, the English adaptation was designed as a separate section at the end of the magazine. The goal was to make the content accessible to readers who do not know Ukrainian without interrupting the original flow of the publication. To make navigation easier, the translation follows the same chapter structure, titles, and subtitles as the main issue.
